If today there is a strong probability that the Basque language dates back to prehistoric times, its real origins are, and will remain, it seems, a mystery. The most serious studies have ruled out the hypothesis of the attachment of the Basque language to the Indo-European languages (from which the Latin, Greek, Germanic roots… of our current languages come)
The origin of the name “Basque” used today comes from a deformation of “Wascone” which was the name that the Romans had given to the people who then occupied a large part of Aquitaine (in France) and the north from Spain.
It is from the Middle Ages that the Basque language really begins to be known. Indeed, pilgrims who go to Santiago de Compostela must cross the Basque country. A small lexicon containing the most common words was created around 1134.
In 1570, we owe Jeanne d’Albret the Basque translation of the New Testament.
